Springfield, the state capitol of Illinois, was the home of Abraham Lincoln, the lawyer, prior to his election to the Presidency of the United States. His home, the Old State Capitol, and his gravesite are among the attractions which can be visited.

Dubois Grade School in Springfield was the site where U.S. Grant first mustered troops for the Civil War. [Thanks to Jim Delaney for submitting this site].
