Named for Hugh Mercer

Hugh Mercer [1726-1777] was a physician. A general during the American Revolution, Mercer was mortally wounded at the battle of Princeton.

Established Seven Years after Illinois became a State

Formed from unorganized territory attached to Pike County, Illinois on 13 Jan 1825.
